Job Summary:

The JAMP Mentoring Student Assistant (JAMP Peer Mentor) plays a crucial role in providing leadership for the UTMB JAMP Summer II Internship. Mentors contribute to achieving the program's overarching goals by exposing scholars to various facets of medical education and the medical school environment. Emphasis is placed on preparing scholars for the medical school admissions process, enhancing academic skills, providing clinical shadowing opportunities, aiding in MCAT preparation, and fostering professional identity formation. Each mentor serves as a role model, guiding JAMP scholars in understanding the demands and rewards of medical school. This role demands dedication, empathy, and effective mentorship skills to support JAMP scholars in their academic and personal development during the summer internship.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as a mentor to 3-4 JAMP scholars individually throughout the summer internship.
  • Provide intentional and individualized mentorship through a minimum of 2 mentoring sessions per week, lasting no more than 2 hours each.
  • Allocate 1 hour per week for preparing mentoring sessions.
  • Coordinate and facilitate at least one off-campus social activity/team-building event per week for scholars.
  • Familiarize scholars with the UTMB campus and Galveston Island and assist with transportation for program activities as needed.
  • Conduct a 1-hour group session to review academic coursework, assist with the TMDSAS application process, or provide MCAT preparation support.
  • Attend training workshops for JAMP Peer Mentors and virtual weekly meetings with the JAMP Medical School Coordinator.
  • Facilitate at least one clinical skills workshop for scholars.
  • Participate in interview practice sessions with scholars and provide constructive feedback on non-cognitive aspects.
  • Submit scholar evaluations by pre-determined deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate positive mentorship.
  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Interest in working with low-income, first-generation college students, and individuals from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Previous experience in coaching, mentoring, teaching, or counseling preferred.

Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience.
