Social Worker MSW, (LCSW) Internal Med - Palliative Care
Min Qualifications:
Master's degree in Social Work or related field; 2 years experience required. Must be licensed to practice as a Social Worker in Texas (LBSW, LMSW, LCSW).
Specific Job Related Duties:
- Provides emotional support, grief counseling, psychotherapy and bereavement assessments to patients and their families who are experiencing psychological and emotional difficulties in the face of terminal and/or debilitating illness for all Palliative Medicine patients.
- Education – Provides education and guidance on palliative medicine services and end-of-life care to all Palliative Medicine patients; educates and empower patients to take an active role in expressing and documenting the preferences and goals of care pertaining to their medical condition (Advanced Care Planning).
- Attends/facilitates family meetings as a palliative/hospice resource.
- Crisis intervention- Supports Palliative Medicine care team during medical crisis. Provides Institution crisis intervention as needed.
- Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Education – Provides patient education and guidance on palliative medicine services and options. This is a requirement for UTMB to maintain Joint Commission Health Disease Specific Certification of the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Program.

Preferred Skill/Competency:
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Texas
- Experience working with patients in the Hospice/Palliative Care setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to exercise objectivity and good judgment relating to difficult and emotionally charged situations
