Min Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in basic science or equivalent and 2 years of related experience or Master's degree in basic science or equivalent and no experience required.

Specific Job Related Duties:

Rotating Shifts and Hours Early mornings required.

Perform research investigating novel therapeutics for critical illness.

Employee will become familiar with research protocols ongoing in the laboratory, assist in developing new research protocols, and help contribute to future direction of research.

Critical duties consist of data collection and carrying out research protocols, consisting of:

  • Care of intravenous catheters & aseptic technique
  • Independent anesthetic induction & intubation without supervision, anesthesia monitoring
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical ventilation protocols and clinical applications
  • Recording accurate cardiovascular parameters
  • Drug pharmacology knowledge
  • Knowledge of emergency resuscitative techniques, perform procedures as required to maintain research as required - could consist of, but not limited to; maintaining airway patency, administering emergency medication, euthanasia, or other procedures as required
  • Operate, calibrate & troubleshoot all diagnostic equipment in lab - takes necessary steps to maintain equipment and ensure expected performance of laboratory equipment as required under supervision
  • Sample collection of biological fluids
  • Operate, calibrate & troubleshoot all diagnostic point-of-care machinery used in lab
  • Analyze & interpret results; follow protocols & judgment to determine course of action during studies
  • Perform tissue collection at necropsy
  • Independently determines courses of action for research studies based on complex diagnostic and study criteria.
  • Ensures compliance with federal regulations and animal welfare during assigned shift

Other routine duties will consist of the following:

  • Critical input as a Respiratory Care professional to maintain quality and clinical relevancy of research results, helps guide future direction of research areas and determine best practices
  • Animal Care, including animal rounds to record temperature, amount of fluid consumption, administration of antibiotics, intravenous and other ordered medications, and basic evaluation of health status
  • Prepare animals for experimental protocol.  Setup, calibrate and connect cardiovascular monitoring equipment, ventilators, and other equipment as required for experiment
  • Assist in operating room as required
  • Staff will be responsible for cleaning, organization, stocking, and maintenance of lab, lab equipment, and all areas of use
  • Disinfection and removal of biological debris after each experiment is completed, up to an ABSL-2 level.  Also consists of appropriate cleaning and care of all medical equipment used
  • Setup for following experiments; consisting of transducer catheters, sample tubes, and cardiovascular equipment for following experiments
  • Performs other duties as required

Days with some evening/night hours required as needed.

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experienece

Preferred Skills:

 Prior experience in a research setting, prior large animal, or other animal experience. Prior BSL2 experience. Experience in working with biologic samples, Good Laboratory Practice, tabulating, interpreting, and analyzing data. Preferred skill competency in Respiratory Care, preferably as a certified four year graduate of RT program. Completes ongoing CEU’s (continuing education) in the maintenance of this certification, and disseminates the latest in clinical advances and respiratory care to the lab.
