JOB DESCRIPTION:
This physician position will serve as a Flight Surgeon at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in support of the Human Health and Performance Contract with KBR. The flight surgeon will provide medical support to NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Medical Operations by providing medical expertise and knowledge for development of medical requirements, procedures, processes and supporting Mission Control Center-Houston (MCC-H) and/or operations in Star City, Russia. Additional responsibilities may include providing support to the International Space Station (ISS) and Commercial Crew Program (CCP) operations, requirement development/integration and future operation of the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) Program, Human Landing System (HLS) Program, Gateway Program, Extravehicular Activity (EVA) and Human Surface Mobility (HSM) Program (EHP), supporting the JSC Flight Medicine Clinic, as well as other tasks/projects assigned in support of Medical Operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Specific duties include:

  • Training and completing certification for Flight Surgeon Console support in Mission Control –Houston (MCC-H).
  • Reviewing and assisting with documentation development (Flight Rules, requirement documents, etc)
  • Providing support to the development and verification of Medical Operations procedures used by crewmembers in space. 
  • Monitoring NASA astronaut crewmembers physical testing, medical evaluations, science data collection, and crew training sessions during potentially hazardous activities.
  • Keeping JSC management, through the lead Crew Surgeon, advised of flight crewmember health during training and testing for assigned NASA missions. 
  • Representing JSC Medical Operations on policies and requirements discussions in the absence of a NASA/JSC flight surgeon or when requested by NASA management. 
  • Providing medical information/knowledge/expertise to the different NASA Programs (ISS, CCP, MPCV, HLS, Gateway, and EHP), Flight Operations
  • Directorate (FOD) and Human Health and Performance Directorate (HH&P) boards.
  • Maintaining the medical office and Advanced Life Support Packs in Star City. To include inventory, restock/resupply, and equipment checkout. 
  • Providing primary acute care for U.S. astronauts, NASA personnel and their dependents on deployment in Star City. To include monitoring NASA astronaut crewmember schedules, physical testing, medical evaluations, science data collection, and crew training sessions during potentially hazardous activities in Star City, and accompany patients during medical evacuation out of Russia or from a Soyuz landing site.
  • Serving as point of contact for communications (not policy decisions) with Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC) medical establishment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Flight Surgeons supporting NASA responsible for engaging in mission support and care of U.S. Astronauts will have:
  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution (or MBBS/MBChB or equivalent if medical training was completed outside of the U.S.).
  • Ability to obtain a Texas medical license within 6 months of being hired.
  • Board certification in either their primary specialty or aerospace medicine, and have completed either: 
  • military primary aerospace medicine training leading to the designation of flight surgeon.
  • an aerospace medicine residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
    or an accredited Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine fellowship.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Recent operational flight surgeon experience in the last two years.
  • Knowledge of current operational activities involved in manned space flight is highly desired.
