REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5 years’ experience in public/media relations, marketing, journalism or related field.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or a related field.
  • 3 years of social media content creation and platform management experience
  • Knowledge of health care industry trends and compliance requirement
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt messaging to various audiences, including academic, medical and general public.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of FERPA compliance and its application in digital communications.
  • Crisis communication training and/or certification, with the ability to respond effectively and appropriately across platform during sensitive or high-stakes situations.

JOB SUMMARY:

The University of Texas Medical Branch is hiring a talented Marketing, Media and Communications Specialist—Social Media to develop and implement effective social media strategies and content across multiple platforms for its institutional social media channels and for the John Sealy School of Medicine’s (JSSOM) MD and PA Studies programs and executive leadership team. This role involves creating content that showcases the JSSOM’s accomplishments and news—including research updates, educational achievements, and community initiatives both within UTMB and in the local and regional communities it serves. The successful candidate will possess a blend of creativity, strategic thinking and a deep understanding of the health care industry

Scope: Institution-wide

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Work directly with the UTMB Health marketing and communications team and executive leadership from the JSSOM MD and PA Studies programs and to create a comprehensive social media strategy that aligns with the institution's goals, enhances program visibility, and supports student recruitment, engagement and retention.
  • Develop content calendars, track KPIs, and prepare performance reports.
  • Manage content for all social media channels, including but not limited to LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Bluesky and  Instagram.
  • Produce high-quality content that includes articles, blog posts, videos, and graphics to support the university’s initiatives across both  the MD and PA Studies programs. 
  • Monitor social media channels for industry trends.
  • Engage with followers and respond to comments and inquiries in a manner consistent with the university’s tone and policies.
  • Collaborate with  departments across campus to gather content and stories.
  • Ensure compliance with health care industry and educational regulations and guidelines in all published material.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms, content management systems (CMS), email marketing software, analytics platforms, SEO tools, and paid advertising platforms
  • Experience in leveraging data analytics to optimize campaigns and improve user engagement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling written messages and effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Familiarity with social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Meltwater)
  •  Proven track record in growing social media engagement and reach
  • Proficiency in project management, multitasking, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  •  Ability to produce a wide variety of social media content, including written posts, video and photos
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data, interpret metrics, and make data-driven decisions
  • Knowledge of social media marketing tactics and analytics 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Standard office environment based on the UTMB Galveston Campus. Some daytime and/or overnight travel may be required to cover stories and/or cultivate relationships with sources and news media. Some work outside of standard business hours, including weekends, may be required, depending on nature of assignments/individual job focus.

SALARY RANGE:

Commensurate with experience $62,800 - $78,500
