HCSS Animal Resources Technologist
Job Summary
Provides technical expertise in veterinary anesthesia, aseptic surgical support, pre- and post-operative care, and veterinary clinical/laboratory services. Supports research and husbandry operations using established procedures and appropriate equipment in environments up to an Animal Biological Safety Level 3 (ABSL-3) facility. Must be able to obtain and maintain DOJ clearance.
Essential Job Functions
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as facility standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to humane animal care and use.
- Administers veterinary treatments as directed.
- Provides technical support for research activities.
- Assists in developing and delivering training on specialized techniques required to support research programs.
- Participates in daily veterinary rounds and animal health assessments.
- Collects biological samples and performs diagnostic testing.
- Provides pre-operative and post-operative care for veterinary patients.
- Performs anesthesia induction, monitoring, and maintenance.
- Provides aseptic surgical support and assists during procedures.
- Prepares, cleans, and organizes operating rooms and surgical packs.
- Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots medical and surgical equipment.
- Performs radiographic imaging and processing.
- Maintains accurate surgical, veterinary, and regulatory records.
- Demonstrates knowledge of biohazard safety and containment procedures.
- Monitors facility operations, including safety, security, and maintenance standards in high-containment environments.
- Maintains professional, effective working relationships with colleagues, leadership, and visitors.
- Follows internal departmental controls and procedures.
Marginal or Periodic Job Functions
- Provides and/or oversees daily husbandry activities including feeding, sanitation, and enrichment for multiple species (small and large animals).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education / Experience
- Graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program; or
- Completion of Military Occupational Specialty (MOS 68T – Animal Care Specialist); or
- RVT, CVT, or LVT certification (or eligibility with certification required within one year of hire); or
- Four (4) years of related experience with emphasis on veterinary technician skills.

- Laboratory animal science equipment used in a multi-species research facility.
- Diagnostic and surgical instruments.
- Standard office equipment.
Working Environment / Location of Position
- Animal research facility environment up to ABSL-3 containment level.
- Frequent exposure to animal allergens (hair, dander).
- Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, biohazards, radiation, and research materials that may pose risks, including to fetal health.
