Director of Simulation - Health Education Center
Summary:
The Director provides independent expertise to bridge the use of human and non-human simulation applications in learning and assessment within the Health Education Center (HEC) for all learners across the UTMB enterprise, as well as for external stakeholders.
Scope:
Provides administrative leadership, departmental oversight, and support for simulation and standardized patient (SP) activities within the HEC, including staff management, centralized scheduling, training and monitoring, and assessment applications; collaboratively develops and refines simulated, SP, and Augmented/Virtual Reality experiences; partners with lead faculty content experts, other faculty from all five schools, and external partners to design and implement human and non-human simulation applications.
Responsibilities:
- Provides oversight in the HEC for all human and non-human simulation activities.
- Trains, manages, and supervises staff.
- Refines and implements guidelines and standardized operating procedures for day-to-day activities and center utilization.
- Ensures integrity of systems and technology before, during, and after utilization.
- Maintains adequate supplies and resources to support center activities.
- Implements a scheduling system that is centralized, seamless, and equitable.
- Manage the expenditure for the supply budget.
- Prepare reports on all program activities, standards, and accreditation requirements, external meetings, educational concerns, and student/staff successes.
- Raise awareness of the use of simulation resources internally and externally through grant funded opportunities, presentations, and peer reviewed publications.
- Supports and advocates for interprofessional simulation activities.
- Contributes clinical and training expertise to Simulated, Standardized Patient, and Mixed Reality learning activities.
- Apply clinical expertise to assess accuracy and reliability of requests for development of new activities.
- Monitors continuous quality improvement in conjunction with Lead Faculty Content Experts for all areas and existing activities.
- Assists with development of applications for Basic Skills Labs, Simulators, SP, and Mixed/Virtual reality experiences in all school curricula in collaboration with faculty.
- Provides educational expertise to clinical faculty for curriculum and instructional development.
- Aligns schedules, staff, and resources within the HEC to support educational activities.
- Provide oversight for conducting all simulations with human (SP) and non-human simulators for learning and assessment within the HEC.
- Coordinates simulation events with faculty, staff and students.
- Prepares and organizes staff to conduct and assist with exercises throughout the center.
- Assigns support staffing for all areas in preparation for learner activities.
- Assist with provision of educational evaluation of educational events.
- Collaborates with faculty content experts across UTMB and on the IPE curriculum task force on curriculum development and faculty development related to simulation.
- Coordinate activities across the center to ensure access for all learners.
- Serve as a liaison to the HEC IPE Advisory Committee.
- Help to identify and implement faculty development activities that assist faculty in innovating in interprofessional education and simulation learning.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in nursing, education, health professions or related field plus three (3) years of progressive supervisory experience including simulation-based education and training, evaluation of outcomes, patient safety, and implementation of innovative simulation-based education and training programs necessary, or an equivalent.
- Demonstrated knowledge of simulation platforms and operation of technology.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), or obtainment of certification within two years of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in education, healthcare education, educational psychology, or closely related field
- Eligible for academic appointments as an Associate Professor or rank equivalent to experience.
- Three (3) years of experience teaching healthcare students.
- Experience with applications of simulations (standardized/simulated patients, non-human/mechanical/models) in healthcare education
