Director of Retail & Specialty Pharmacy Services
Summary:
The Director of Retail and Specialty Pharmacy Services provides enterprise‑wide leadership and accountability for UTMB’s retail community pharmacies and specialty pharmacy programs, ensuring safe, efficient, compliant, and patient‑centered medication access across all sites of care. The Director is responsible for multi‑site strategy and operations, accreditation and regulatory compliance, financial performance, growth, payer and network enablement in partnership with Managed Care, and seamless integration with Medication Access, Infusion, and Clinical Services. The role advances capture, adherence, and outcomes through data‑driven performance management, exceptional service, and scalable operating standards.
Scope:
UTMB Hospitals and Clinics across the UTMB Health System; UTMB retail community pharmacies, mail‑delivery/central fill (if applicable), and specialty pharmacy services (onsite and/or centralized).
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for retail and specialty pharmacy growth and service excellence across all UTMB sites.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to enhance access, continuity of care, and patient experience.
Evaluate opportunities for expansion, network participation, payer contracting, and business development.
Direct daily operations of retail and specialty pharmacies, including staffing, scheduling, workflow, and inventory management.
Establish and maintain standardized processes for dispensing, verification, delivery, and adherence support.
Ensure the integration of Meds-to-Beds and transitions of care programs in coordination with inpatient and ambulatory teams.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards (Texas State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, CMS, URAC, ACHC, TJC, USP, etc.).
Maintain current pharmacy licenses and specialty pharmacy accreditations.
Develop and maintain quality assurance, audit readiness, and continuous improvement programs.
Develop and manage annual budgets for retail and specialty pharmacy operations.
Monitor and report key performance indicators, including revenue, expenses, inventory turns, adherence metrics, and patient satisfaction.
Partner with Finance and Revenue Cycle to optimize reimbursement, reduce denials, and strengthen financial performance.
Recruit, develop, and retain qualified pharmacy staff.
Establish clear performance expectations and accountability standards for managers, pharmacists, and technicians.
Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous professional growth.
Partners with external entities such as manufacturers, distributors, PBMs, and payers to maintain network participation and improve access.
Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Expertise in sterile compounding, infusion therapy, and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of payer reimbursement and site-of-care strategies.
- Strong leadership and operational management skills.
- Excellent collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
- Financial and analytical skills to manage large-scale infusion operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy plus six (6) years of related pharmacy experience to include three (3) years of related pharmacy management and supervisory experience with progressive responsibility.
- Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas or eligible for licensure from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Must be licensed with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PharmD.
- Advanced degree (M.S., M.B.A., or M.H.A.).
- PGY2 in Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership (HSPAL) or equivalent experience.
- Experience with operating a hospital based 340B program.
- Prior experience managing accredited specialty pharmacy programs and payer network contracts.
- Experience in retail and/or specialty pharmacy.
- Board certification through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.
