JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Media Relations is responsible for developing, executing and evaluating a comprehensive media plan that supports UTMB’s local, national and international efforts in research, education and clinical care. This individual also assists with strategic communications planning including crisis communications and global/corporate communications.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Protect and enhance the image and reputation of UTMB through professional management of media relations function.
  • Develop/implement comprehensive strategies designed to enhance awareness of UTMB in targeted local, state, national, international media outlets and different social media platforms.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with representatives of appropriate local, state and national news media. Develop and maintain accurate contact lists.
  • Serve as a primary contact for UTMB leadership and sources regarding news media; serve as UTMB spokesperson, as appropriate.
  • Monitor health care trends at the national, state, regional and local levels and position UTMB experts, clinical service lines and educational programs in appropriate media markets.
  • Stay informed about trends and breakthroughs in research and clinical care at UTMB and throughout the industry and position UTMB scientists and clinicians with their applicable research in appropriate media outlets locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Write press releases and pitch media opportunities to showcase UTMB faculty and research findings, innovations in education and stories that support the success of UTMB.
  • Work with marketing team to identify and create patient, employee, and student specific content for earned media, marketing and advertising purposes to showcase UTMB’s education, research and clinical care missions.
  • Produce tracking reports of press releases, pitches, media inquiries and media placements/mentions of UTMB.
  • Provide media counsel and training for UTMB sources as needed.
  • Help determine content and assist with online maintenance of Marketing and Communications web site, including the online newsroom and experts guide.
  • Advance the institution’s development and legislative priorities through complementary media relations activities.
  • Assist with development and implementation of crisis communication strategies and plans.
  • Serve as a key member of the institutional emergency management team, with primary responsibility for media and external communication in the event of extreme weather or other emergencies.
  • Respond to all media inquiries in a timely manner and ensure that faculty and leadership are adequately prepared for interviews with key messages, coaching and/or background information.
  • Train marketing and communications personnel across campus to ensure professionalism and continuity of communications with external audiences.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and five years of journalism (print and/or broadcast), media relations or public relations experience.  Two years supervisory/management experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Already established relationships with local, state and national media
  • Master’s degree in a communications field and eight years of journalism (print and/or broadcast), media relations or public relations experience
  • Experience in academic medicine, health care and/or higher education preferred
  • Experience in internal/organizational communications an advantage

 

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proven skills in news writing and editing, media placements, and project planning and execution    
  • Proven ability to produce timely results within a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • A clear “customer service” orientation
  • Experience in preparing and managing an annual budget
  • Familiarity with new/social media functions and opportunities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
