JOB DESCRIPTION:

Cytotechnologist provides clinical diagnostic study of cells for the purpose of recognizing and classifying malignant and benign inflammatory and irritative conditions.

 

With a diverse population and covering a large geographic region, our patient mix brings a lot of interest and diversity.  You won’t be stuck at a microscope reading clinic-based PAP smears all day.  You will attend a wide range of procedures at the main hospital as well as satellite facilities, prescreen both non-gyn and FNA cases from spinal taps through EBUS procedures.  As a teaching facility, residents and fellows add to the interest and you’ll interact with professional staff on the daily.  We’re committed to your professional development and involve our techs in myriad projects from QA and statistical analysis to educational projects for presentation.  In addition to the technical variety, it’s a lovely place to work with caring people and great benefits.  (All just a few blocks from the beach!)

 

This position will rotate between Galveston, League City, and Clear Lake campuses. Must be willing to work at all 3 locations.

  • Fixes, stains, and prepares microscopic slides to preserve specimen and enhance visibility.  
  • Evaluates cell color, shape, and size to determine abnormalities.
  • Examines human cell samples to determine the presence of precancerous changes, cancer, or infections.
  • Performs a variety of laboratory procedures.
  • Assists clinicians within the hospital for the procurement of material from fine needle aspirations.
  • Assures specimen labeling requirements are met and all necessary clinical information is available.  
  • Responds to inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and specific factors that can influence test results.
  • Assists with or performs accessioning, processing, and staining of specimens in accordance with the cytology processing manual.
  • Records classification and presents unusual characteristics to the pathologist.
  • Maintains records of assignments performed in cytology section.
  • Participates in continuing education, quality control procedures and documents accordingly; participates in proficiency testing.
  • Maintains laboratory area and equipment and performs including proper disposal of all bio-hazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials.
  • Maintains accurate inventory to complete work, and orders supplies as needed.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Adheres to all safety protocols in each laboratory area.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field, and certification as a Cytotechnologist by an approved accrediting agency required, and no experience required.
