Cytotechnologist
JOB DESCRIPTION
Cytotechnologist provides clinical diagnostic study of cells for the purpose of recognizing and classifying malignant and benign inflammatory and irritative conditions.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in related field.
• Certification as a Cytotechnologist by an approved accrediting agency.
• No experience required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Fixes, stains, and prepares microscopic slides to preserve specimen and enhance visibility.
• Evaluates cell color, shape, and size to determine abnormalities.
• Examines human cell samples to determine the presence of precancerous changes, cancer, or infections.
• Performs a variety of laboratory procedures.
• Assists clinicians within the hospital for the procurement of material from fine needle aspirations.
• Assures specimen labeling requirements are met and all necessary clinical information is available.
• Responds to inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and specific factors that can influence test results.
• Assists with or performs accessioning, processing, and staining of specimens in accordance with the cytology processing manual.
• Records classification and presents unusual characteristics to the pathologist.
• Maintains records of assignments performed in cytology section.
• Participates in continuing education, quality control procedures and documents accordingly; participates in proficiency testing.
• Maintains laboratory area and equipment and performs including proper disposal of all bio-hazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials.
• Maintains accurate inventory to complete work, and orders supplies as needed.
• Adheres to internal controls established for department.
• Adheres to all safety protocols in each laboratory area.
• Performs related duties as required.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4 pm.
