Min Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in audiology, with at least ten years of applicable professional experience that has led to increasing levels of technical and leadership responsibilities.
  • Technical, functional, and policy development experience in large-scale hearing conservation programs (including audiometric testing, education, recommendations for hearing protective devices, and program evaluation).
  • Clinical, technical, and functional experience in clinical audiological evaluations and follow-up.
  • Experience with regulatory requirements and technical guidance from OSHA, NIOSH, and the Department of Defense regarding the prevention of noise-related hearing loss.
  • Audiology license from State of Texas (or eligible for Texas licensure).
  • Board Certification by American Board of Audiology (ABA), or Certificate of Clinical Competency in Audiology (CCC-A) from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Certification as a Course Director by Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC).

Specific Job Related Duties:

  • Maintain knowledge of current evidence-based practices in audiology to access, evaluate, and integrate science-supported audiological evidence into clinical practice.
  • Provide expertise and leadership within a dynamic team of acoustic and auditory subject matter experts from NASA and its International Partners working in physical and bioenvironmental aspects of human space flight and ground operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of contemporary research and approaches for reducing the risk of hearing loss, using innovative hearing protective devices, noise control mitigations, pharmacological treatments, recognition of ototoxic risks, and administrative noise controls.
  • Maintain current knowledge of OSHA’s regulatory requirements and NIOSH’s Recommended Criteria for Hearing Conservation Programs.
  • Continually update job knowledge by tracking trends in new techniques and approaches, participate in educational opportunities; maintain personal networks; and actively participate in professional organizations.
  • Practice within an established professional code of ethics and scope of practice for audiologists, within federal, state, and institutional policies and regulations.
  • Improve the effectiveness and results of hearing conservation programs by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes; implementing changes; participating in research programs; and evaluating new equipment, devices, and techniques.
  • Maintain integrity to perform in a professional manner regarding confidentiality with patients, healthcare providers and others.
  • Effectively collaborate within interdisciplinary teams to provide person-centered care that aims to achieve optimal outcomes for the patient.
  • Serve as a referral source and advocate for the rights of individuals who need audiologic services.
  • Responsible for compliance with JSC Clinic policies and procedures; meet deadlines.
  • Maintain current state license, fulfill continuing education requirements, maintain eligibility for malpractice coverage, and fulfill other requirements of professional credentialing as an audiologist.
  • Complete all reports of clinical audiology services in an electronic medical record.
  • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures.
    Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
    Responsible for completing all assigned training.

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience;100% grant funded

Preferred License/Certificate:

Certification as a Professional Supervisor of Audiometric Monitoring by CAOHC

 

Preferred Skill/Competency:

  • Experience in the review of audiometric monitoring data, recommendations for determination of work-related hearing loss, and determination of auditory fitness for duty.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary (aviation medicine, occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, and engineering) groups working on acoustic and auditory issues (such as risks of hearing loss, alarm audibility, and speech intelligibility).
  • Experience in auditory research in effects of noise on hearing, hearing protection, otoprotective agents, and/or auditory localization.
  • Proven ability to identify, test, diagnose, and manage disorders of human hearing; interpret test results of behavioral and objective measures; and communicate results in verbal and written form.
  • Demonstrated success in solving complex problems with well-defined processes that yield measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research, analyze data, and disseminate results
    Demonstrated success in establishing objectives, meeting milestones and managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts effectively across multiple disciplines (e.g., program managers, medical and biomedical personnel, engineers, patients and support staff).
  • Ability to lead and motivate audiology support personnel to high standards of performance and increase efficiency.
    Ability to perform otoscopic examinations and make ear impressions for custom-made earwear
    Excellent oral and written communication skills as an advocate for hearing health and prevention of hearing loss.
    Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Awareness of auditory and nonauditory effects of aviation-related noise on human physiology, behavior, and habitability
  • Ability to safely remove excessive cerumen
  • Ability to identify, test, and recommend management of tinnitus
    Experience in interprofessional teaming with human factors, occupational health and aviation medicine specialists

Work Location

  • This position will be located at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC)
  • Some travel necessary
