Autopsy Assistant
JOB SUMMARY:
Autopsy Assistant provides skilled technical assistance to pathologist and autopsy prosector during post-mortem examination of all patient types, to include male and female pediatric, adolescent and adult decedents.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree or equivalent and two (2) year related experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Completes necessary consent forms with the next-of-kin and medical personnel for the autopsy consent, disposition of the decedent, interacts with the funeral home personnel, Anatomy Department, and organ/tissue procurement agencies as required.
• Prepares and enters all Decedent Affairs paperwork on the computer.
• Maintains and update mortuary and autopsy records, log books, entering histology in the computer and filing histology slides.
• Transports the body to the morgue as needed.
• Orders and pick-ups medical records as required by the autopsy physician.
• Prepares autopsy rooms with necessary instruments, equipment and containers.
• Takes external and in-situ photographs of the decedent and photographs as requested.
• Prepares and delivers specimens to the laboratory.
• Sorts, delivers and/or stores tissue and blood for educational and research purposes.
• Handles all aspects of discarding tissue, and body fluids.
• Coordinates with the Medical Examiner Office concerning all aspect of a medico-legal case.
• Contacts law enforcement agencies as necessary.
• Assist with research protocols.
• Assists with the safety orientation and training in evisceration techniques.
• Dissects and eviscerates designated organs and tissues for further examination as directed.
• Cleans, disinfects and restocks the autopsy rooms and equipments.
• Prepares for autopsy, neuropathology and other related conferences, including conference room set-up and organ presentation.
• Document quality controls.
• Inventory and ensure proper disposal of chemicals.
• Inventory and ordering of supplies as needed.
• Maintain readiness for inspections.
• Adheres to internal controls established for department.
• Adheres to all safety protocols in each laboratory area.
• Performs related duties as required.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Rotating hours. 7:00am - 3:30pm and 7:30am - 4:00pm.
