Assistant Director (Onsite) Research Laboratory, Microbiology and Immunology - Galveston
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in basic science or equivalent and 7 years related experience or master’s degree in basic science or equivalent and 5 years of related experience required.
Job Summary:
Works with the Chief Research Officer (CRO), Director, Institute for Translational Sciences (ITS) Operations, Director of the ITS-Clinical Research Center (CRC), and clinical research Principal Investigators across the UTMB campus who utilize the ITS-CRC. Specifically, provides administrative and technical support for clinical and translational research conducted in the ITS-CRC and affiliated sites. Manages all laboratory operations and oversees the daily activities and experiments of the research staff and partners.
Job Duties:
Administrative:
- Plans and organizes the research and administrative operations of the laboratory. Works with ITS-CRC Director to achieve institutional laboratory compliance.
- Serves as the ITS-CRC Director’s NOU proxy for laboratories located in Galveston and at the ITS-CRC League City Campus satellite.
- Serves as key contact for laboratory and equipment monitoring alarms. Certified to ship biological samples.
- Establishes procedures for management of the use of equipment, including maintenance, repair, and inventory and receiving and shipping.
- Coordinates procurements of equipment and supplies and manages all stages of acquisition cycle.
- Serves as the laboratory point-of-contact in disaster/hurricane events such as pre-shutdown laboratory preparation, critical inventory selection and safeguard storage, participation as part of the ride-out team or as part of the phase I recovery team.
- Interprets rules, regulations, and policies and ensures compliance.
Supervisory:
- Works with the CRO and Director to recruitment, interview and hire those involved in technical support aspects for the ITS-CRC.
- Supervises and trains ITS-CRC laboratory personnel and research teams that use Core Laboratory.
- Instructs research staff in research techniques and how to appropriately analyze and present results.
- Conducts performance appraisals and makes recommendations on staff structure.
Scientific:
- Performs scientific analysis and interpretation of experiments and projects.
- Works with principal investigators to formulate research and analysis plans for all complex research experiments, technical procedures, and future funding proposals.
- Coordinates with CRAs to ensure full compliance with clinical research protocols, pre-selection site visits, and study site inspections to provide equipment maintenance documentation as needed.
- Participates in the development of divisional grant budgets. Oversees expenditures of grant monies. Performs accounting functions; produces expenditure reports.
- Certified to perform iDXA scans.
Member of standing committees at UTMB including Biorepository Oversight Committee, Clinical Research and Educational Support Task Force, Laboratory Safety Committee, and Research Incident Command Team (floor captain).
Salary Range: Actual salary commensurate with experience or range if discussed and approved by hiring authority
